The Theatre Program has visited New York City for a four-day weekend numerous times. Students in every grade who are involved in theatre, whether in a class, part of the fall musical, or a member of the International Thespian Society, are invited to participate in the trip.
While there, students have the opportunity to see five or six Broadway shows, as well as an off-Broadway performance. This, along with private seminars set up with Broadway actors and actresses (previous seminars have been held with the prince from "Cinderella" and actor Joey Taranto from the Tony-award-winning musical "Kinky Boots"), gives the students a unique and in-depth experience of Broadway and the magic of live theatre.
In between shows, they have time to sight-see, visiting the 9/11 Memorial and Ellis Island, and taking tours of the Lincoln Center and Radio City Music Hall.
Every January, our theatre students participate in the Illinois High School Theatre Festival, a huge conference attended by high schools throughout the state of Illinois. The conference switches between the University of Illinois and Illinois State University every year, and involves workshops, seminars, performances by high school and college students, an opportunity to audition for college theatre and/or music programs, and the performance of the All-State Show. The weekend-long event gives our students an experience of a lifetime.
