Sixteen outstanding Mother McAuley junior and senior writers were inducted into membership of Quill and Scroll, the international honor society for high school journalists at a ceremony in Mercy Chapel. Newly inducted members include Julie Adams (Oak Lawn), Annie Beyer (Oak Lawn), Natalie Distasio (Chgo., West Lawn), Erin Doody (Oak Lawn), Molly Gallagher (Chgo., Mt. Greenwood), Erin Kelly (Oak Lawn), Kate Kelly (), Bridget Leiser (Chgo., West Beverly), Joanna Matuszkiewicz (Chgo., Archer Heights), Sarah McAuliffe (Chgo., Mt. Greenwood), Bernadette Muloski (Palos Heights), Megan Needham (Oak Lawn), Heather O’Donnell (Midlothian), Katelyn O’Donnell (Evergreen Park), Laura Raspante (Chgo.,Beverly), and Talett Vanek (Chgo., Bridgeport).
The student journalists were chosen for membership in the honor society for outstanding contributions to their publications, rank in the upper third of their class and recommendation by their advisors. Mrs. Susan Grady is the newspaper advisor, Ms. Julie Kulikauskas, the yearbook advisor and Mrs. Therese Gump, the literary magazine advisor. Quill and Scroll is moderated by Mrs. Jan McAuliffe.
The ceremony was conducted by previously initiated Quill and Scroll member Ellie Newell (Evergreen Park.) After the induction, McAuley Alumna Courtney Greve spoke to the students and their families about her career as a reporter for the Daily Southtown. She shared some of her experiences and gave a realistic depiction of her hectic life as a journalist for a local newspaper and stressed how her McAuley education gave her the confidence that enabled her to tackle any situation. Courtney credits English Department Chairperson Mrs. Virginia Murphy for encouraging her to pursue a career in journalism. Ms. Greve received her journalism degree from the University of Illinois
Quill and Scroll was organized in 1926 by a group of high school newspaper advisors who wanted to reward superior work in the field of high school journalism. The society now has
chapters in more than 13, 000 high schools all over the world; it has over one million alumni. Members may compete in contests and are also eligible for college scholarships.
