Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month - Xotchil Ramirez '24

In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, we are celebrating members of the Latinas Lead club through a Q&A series! Co-Leader of Latinas Lead, Xotchil Ramirez '24, discusses what Hispanic Heritage Month means to her in today's Q&A.

What does Hispanic Heritage Month mean to you?
Hispanic Heritage Month to me is being able to share my culture with others around me. It's about being with family and friends and celebrating independence. It reminds me of the things that my family sacrificed in order to give me such a blessed life.

What are your favorite cultural traditions?
My favorite Hispanic tradition is definitely making tamales and baking cookies with my grandma, aunt, and cousins during Christmas.

Who are your Latino role models?
My Latina role models are definitely my mom and grandma because everything they were able to accomplish. My grandma came to the US not knowing any English and managed to raise kids who became successful. My mom was first generation, so I know things were hard for her. She took advantage of everything that life threw at her and she was able to find success through that. These women in my life are my biggest inspirations and the reason I want to keep fighting to achieve my goals. I want to make them proud.
