In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, we are celebrating members of the Latinas Lead club through a Q&A series! Sofia Huffman '25 discusses her favorite cultural traditions and role models to kick off the series.
What does Hispanic Heritage Month mean to you?
To me, Hispanic Heritage Month means culture and shining a bright spotlight onto all the beauty of diversity of the Latin people!
What are your favorite cultural traditions?
My favorite cultural tradition is honestly the food. That is my #1 tradition that will forever have a special place in my heart. Latin food isn't just for eating, it tells a story of all the people who came before me. The flavors make me feel proud to be Puerto Rican because it reminds me of this exactly.
Who are your Latino role models?
My Latina role models include Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor and Rita Moreno. These women have represented and made so many Hispanic people proud to be who they are. Justice Sotomayor was the first Latina justice and Rita Moreno was the first woman to ever win an EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony). I had the honor to meet Justice Sotomayor in 6th grade at her book signing and I will never forget it! (View this photo below!)
