Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s), With just four weeks of school left for most of our students (just two for the seniors!), the school is really abuzz with events, activities, and sheer excitement! Tonight, our seniors will get all dressed up to attend their Senior Prom at the elegant Drake Hotel in downtown Chicago. What a wonderful night it will be! Then on Sunday, May 1st, all fathers or father figures are welcome to attend 4:30pm mass with their daughters at the Father/Daughter Mass in Mercy Chapel. Next Tuesday night on May 3rd, we will host our spring honors night to induct students into our language honor societies. Following on Wednesday, May 4th, the most beautiful voices will fill the auditorium for our spring choral concert at 7pm. Then on Thursday, May 5th, we double the fun with our annual art show, Artapalooza, right after school followed by the spring band concert at 7pm in the auditorium. The following week, our string ensembles will perform in the spring strings concert on Wednesday, May 11 at 7pm in the auditorium. On Thursday, May 12, our seniors and their parents will gather for the Baccalaureate Mass at 7pm in the auditorium. Seniors will return on Friday, May 13 for a mandatory graduation practice followed by the Senior Academy Awards. We cap off that week with graduation at Saint Xavier's Shannon Center on Sunday, May 15th at noon. While all of these festivities are going on, we recognize our Advanced Placement students will be taking the AP exams over the next two weeks. Best of luck to all of those students! Go Macs! School Counseling Prior to Spring Break, counselors spoke to freshman Theology students about the benefits of a growth mindset- the ability to see challenges as a means of growth and a way to develop one's abilities by focusing on their strengths and celebrating others. This growth mindset is resilience, one's ability to bounce back when life happens. The reality is that life is not linear, and young adults especially face trials that might lead to moments of doubt, sadness, stress, or even anxiety when a goal is not achieved, or when trauma is experienced. However, teaching techniques that will allow them to go through difficulties with the confidence that they will recover, and the strength to face future challenges fosters resilience and provides the adaptability students need to face the world. As we continue conversation around mental health and moving beyond the ideal of perfectionism, consider the reality of resilience as a step to help students define realistic goals, and as a means to face the challenges that accompany them. Stuff happens, and when it does, it is okay to bounce back. Resilience builds the confidence we all need to grow through what we go through to be happy. Please check out the following resources for tips and more information about resilience. |

These documents will be used for the graduation book and our MACceptance Wall. All documents must be submitted by Monday, May 2nd. Over spring break, a group of juniors and teachers joined up with Habitat for Humanity Chicago. They spent the day moving topsoil, leveling and tamping it, and then laying sod. Together with the community, they helped Habitat build a group of homes in our neighborhood. They worked with employees and volunteers from Habitat, Americore and even some regular local volunteers. It was an amazing experience joining in to improve the lives of people in our community! |
