Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s), Similar to what we are seeing in our neighboring schools, the number of positive COVID-19 cases has increased this week at McAuley. Thus far, the positive cases have not represented a cluster of cases that would impact our normal school schedule. We continue to remain mask optional, which means students and families can choose what works best for them. As a reminder, symptoms of COVID-19 include: - Fever or chills
- Cough
- Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
- Fatigue
- Muscle or body aches
- Headache
- New loss of taste or smell
- Sore throat
- Congestion or runny nose
- Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
If your daughter experiences some of these symptoms, we encourage her to take a COVID-19 test. When our school nurse, Mrs. Gruber, receives notice of a positive case, we report this information to the Chicago Department of Public Health and continue to adhere to their quarantine guidance, which can be found here. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Gruber at 773-881-6524 or by email at agruber@mothermcauley.org. With just two weeks left of the school year, we are confident we can finish strong! Please note final exams for freshmen, sophomores, and juniors are scheduled for May 25 (periods 7, 3, 1) from 8am - 11:20am, May 26 (periods 6, 4, 2) from 8am - 11:20am, and May 27 (periods 5, 8) from 8am - 10:10am. Students do not need to report to their lunch or study if it occurs during the first or last period during the exam schedule. As you enjoy this warm spring weather, please keep our seniors and their families in your prayers as they celebrate their Commencement Ceremony on Sunday, May 15th at noon. Go Macs! With summer break on the horizon and the excitement of starting a new chapter, students can get lost in their thoughts and lose the motivation they held onto throughout the school year. In order to stay focused and continue working toward our goals, it is important that we understand the two types of motivation in order to dig deep and find reason to keep pushing forward. Motivation can be intrinsic or extrinsic. Intrinsic motivation comes from the interest and enjoyment of the task itself. The process and result can be fun and filled with growth, passion and curiosity. Extrinsic motivation is based on the outcome that will result by doing the task. Most of the time, there is a tangible or recognizable reward such as a prize, promotion or praise. We need both types of motivation to achieve positive relationships, academic and career success. Parents and teachers can help drive these motivations by understanding the best way to encourage the individual student. In some situations, extrinsic motivation is necessary to get day to day tasks done. In other instances, students may thrive off positive feedback and leave them feeling intrinsically motivated. Keep this in mind as we get closer to the end of the school year. As finals are approaching at the end of this month, test taking anxiety may start to arise for your child. The JED foundation has put together resources with strategies for helping relieve anxiety leading up to test taking. Please explore and share these resources with your student. You may even find a strategy that helps lessen your overall anxiety and stress. | | | College Counseling Juniors The week of May 16, the juniors will complete their final College Masterclass of the academic year! We will review how to request letters of recommendation and the checklist of tasks below. - Create a Common Application Account and complete the Common Application Tab.
- Students should not complete the My Colleges tab (college-specific questions) until early August 2022.
- Continue working on their college research spreadsheet
- Check what schools require teacher/counselor letters of recommendation
- Request letters of recommendation from a teacher or a counselor
- Finalize college essays and have two other people proofread
- Plan campus visits
The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) and the JED foundation created a guide for parents on how to address talking about mental health with their students who are going off to college. This guide also highlights what common signs of Mental Health to be aware of and provides action steps and resources on how to best support students dealing with Mental Illness while on campus. This guide may be used to help start the conversation about college and how it can affect Mental Health.
